Harlandale (16-8, 4-2) moved into a third-place tie with Highlands with a pair of wins in District 28-5A matches.
Harlandale defeated Sam Houston (7-13, 3-4) 25-17, 19-25, 25-11. 25-10 Sept. 18 in the Indians’ gym.
The Indians controlled the last two games with help from Tanya Ramos (18 kills, 4 blocks) and Maddy Mendez (12 kills, 2 blocks). Other leading hitters were Brooks Academy transfer Hailey Rinewalt (7 kills, 6 aces, 2 blocks), Skye Perez (6 kills, 2 blocks) and Cassandra Munoz (5 kills, 8 digs, 4 aces).
Harlandale also received a team-high 24 assists from Kianna Sandoval (2 aces). Brandie Hererra chipped in 15.
For Sam Houston, Alejandra Mendez led the way with 17 digs, five kills and four aces. Natalie Coburn contributed 12 kills and five digs. Rita Davis distributed 15 assists. Jakailah McBride added three blocks.
On Sept. 15 at Lanier, the Indians edged the Voks (9-12, 1-5) 25-16, 25-15, 21-25, 20-25, 15-7. Mendez pounded 20 kills. Pamela Sandoval finished with 21 digs and Kianna Sandoval recorded 26 assists. Herrera served four aces. Ramos made a team-best three blocks.
For Lanier, Rae Ann Douglas dealt 13 assists and served four aces. Esmi Garza made 19 digs. Jenny Flores, Lauren Vidaurri and Cheyenne Flores each logged two blocks.
Highlands (14-7, 4-1) bashed Burbank (5-13 ???, 1-3) 25-20, 25-17, 25-8 Sept. 15, but fell to co-district-leader McCollum (17-8, 6-0) 25-15, 25-15, 23-25, 25-18 Sept. 18.
In the Burbank match, senior Bryten Mitchan led Highlands with 12 kills. Jazlyn Losoya distributed 24 assists and served three aces. Jazmine Jackson slammed five blocks. Genesis Garcia compiled a team-high 20 digs.
The Bulldogs were led by Antwanisha Riddle with nine blocks and five kills. Ciara Barnes contributed seven kills. Katherine Regalado made 17 digs.
Jefferson 3, Brackenridge 2
The Mustangs (6-11, 2-4) pulled out a tough, five-game District 28-5A win over Brackenridge (6-23, 1-6) 23-25, 30-28, 23-25, 25-16, 15-6 Sept. 18 at Alamo Convocation Center.
Jefferson was led by Angela Hardcastle with 23 kills and 26 digs. Madelyn Chavez dealt 52 assists. Victoria Masen thumped nine blocks.
Brackenridge was led by senior Skyler Reyna with 12 kills. Marquanique Freeman dished 19 assists. Eshe Malone added six blocks and two aces. Luz Anguiano provided 20 digs.
At Fox Tech, Liliana Capistran led the host Buffaloes with six assists and four kills. Alicia Martinez had a team-high five kills and served two aces. Desiree Bernal distributed nine assists. Destiny Lechuga logged four digs.
Jefferson statistics were unavailable.
McCollum 3, Highlands 1
The Cowboys notched a pair of wins to remain tied with Edison for first place in District 28-5A ahead of their Sept. 22 meeting.
McCollum downed Brackenridge 25-7, 25-10, 25-6 Sept. 15 and won a tough match against Highlands (14-8, 4-2) 25-15, 25-15, 23-25, 25-18 Sept. 18.
The Cowboys’ Alyssa Dimas served five aces and Lauryn Maldonado landed two in the Highlands match. Sophomore Miranda Rich produced five kills and three digs.
Highlands was led by Mitchan with 17 kills, Garcia with 25 digs and Losoya with 26 assists.
Against Brackenridge, senior Victoria Yzaguirre led McCollum with 10 kills, nine digs and three aces. Rich was credited with 15 aces, eight digs and four kills. Alysia Garcia dealt 11 assists and Savannah Borjas added eight.
Samantha Rodriguez chipped in 10 kills. Alyssa Dimas added five aces and Jurnee Dimas had three.
For the Eagles, Reyna had a team-best seven digs, followed by Anguiano (6), Freeman (5) and Rebekah Esquivel (5). Malone served three aces.
Edison 3, Burbank 1
The Golden Bears (15-15, 6-0) headed toward their District 28-5A showdown with McCollum with a pair of wins. Edison defeated Sam Houston 25-13, 25-17, 25-23 Sept. 15 and Burbank 25-20, 25-20, 19-25, 25-18 Sept. 18 in matches at the Alamo Convocation Center.
Marissa Cortinas led Edison with 22 assists, 15 digs, eight kills and three aces against Burbank. Liann Mayen produced 11 kills, three aces and three blocks. D’Anne Gonzalez finished with 17 assists. Samantha Lara (9 kills, 10 digs) and Kamryn Duque (8 kills, 18 digs) were key contributors. Kayla Lyons (24 digs) and Elizabeth Robledo (9 digs) were defensive standouts.
Burbank received 22 digs and two aces from Regalado. Riddle added eight blocks and six kills. Jessica Molina distributed 11 assists.
Against Sam Houston, Edison’s leading hitters were Lara (8 kills), Duque (6 kills), Cortinas (5 kills), Mayen 5 kills). Duque also served seven aces and made nine digs. Cortinas dealt 11 assists and Gonzalez had nine. Lyons made 12 digs.
For the Hurricanes, senior Rita Davis finished with 21 assists, four digs and two aces. Jakailah McBride had a team-high five blocks. Natalie Coburn produced 10 digs and eight kills. Alejandra Mendez added nine kills and six digs. Ariyon Mondy led Sam Houston with 11 digs.
