Lanier is starting to make some noise under first-year coach Brandon Baldwin.

In fact, the Voks (3-5, 3-3) probably raised some eyebrows March 11 with a pair of wins over District 28-5A playoff contenders. Lanier began the day with a 12-8 win over Highlands (5-5, 2-3) and finished it with a 6-5 walkoff victory over Edison (8-4, 3-2).

Harlandale (4-7-2, 3-2), which shared third place with Edison, defeated fifth-place Lanier 7-1 March 12, at the end of spring break.

Against Edison, the Golden Bears tied the score in the seventh when Mari Quinones singled and came in on a double steal for a 5-4 lead.

Lanier tied it as Samantha Ibarra (3-for-3) led off the Voks’ seventh with a single and scored on Amanda Davila’s triple. Pitcher Ashley Flores (3-for-4) followed with an RBI single.

In the win over Highlands, Lanier broke a 5-5 tie with two runs in the fifth. Voks senior shortstop Brandi Mojica was 3-for-4 with a double. Ashley Lopez finished with two doubles and three RBIs. Jolene Garcia, Destiny Garza (double) and Davila (triple) each drove in two runs.

Harlandale snapped Lanier’s hot streak with a three-run rally in the fourth. Skylar Perez contributed a double and Nadia Dominguez added an RBI single to the Indians’ outburst.

Southwest

The Dragons (14-5) fell just short of a championship March 14 at the San Marcos Tournament. The host school edged Southwest 4-3 with two runs in the bottom of the sixth and final inning.

Southwest, which won its first four tournament games by a combined score of 29-0, had taken the lead in the top of the inning. The Dragons defeated San Marcos for last year’s Region IV championship.

Junior Caitlin Terrazas delivered an RBI double and Yanira Fernandez added an RBI single earlier in the game. Terrazas hit a home run and Kristal Salinas drove in three runs in an 11-0 win over Dallas Bishop Lynch March 13.

Terrazas pitched a two-hit shutout in the tourney opener, as the Dragons trounced Canyon Lake 10-0. Deja Tapia recorded a three-hitter in Southwest’s 3-0 win over El Paso Americas.

The Dragons reached the finals with wins over Shiner 5-3 and Houston Lamar 4-3 March 14.

Highlands 11, Burbank 1

The Owls grabbed a two-run lead in the first inning and continued to expand on it for a District 28-5A victory over Burbank (2-9-1, 1-4) March 12 at Mary Ann Villarreal Field No. 1.

Singles by Jenelle Rodriguez and Jessica Garza led to Highlands’ first two runs. A bases-loaded fielder’s choice from Bella de la Garza answered Burbank’s run in the third. Garza added a two-run triple in the fourth that built a 6-1 lead.

Highlands pitcher Jenna Devora limited the Bulldogs to two hits.
