Jefferson sweeps Harlandale in 28-5A opener

East Central seemed to unlock its considerable promise as a team last weekend at the Ragin’ Rattler Tournament in San Marcos. The Hornets (11-11) finished second in the two-day tournament, losing only to Mansfield Summit 22-25, 25-14, 25-15 in the championship match.
Before facing Summit, East Central had not lost a game all week, including a 25-19, 25-10, 26-24 non-district victory at Clemens Aug. 26. In the tournament, the Hornets breezed through last Friday with a 25-5, 25-6 decision over Kyle Lehman, a 25-7, 25-16 win over Manor and an impressive 25-12, 25-17 victory over Victoria West.
Last Saturday, East Central began the day with a 25-17, 25-21 win against Giddings. In the semifinals, the Hornets edged Keller Fossil Ridge 25-23, 25-21. Kaylin Milles contributed nine digs, three kills and seven assists. Freshman Skeyler Embry led a balanced offensive attack with five kills. Brandi Campos (12 digs) and Nichole West (10 digs) were East Central’s defensive standouts.
In the title match, Mills dealt 15 assists and Alex Pena added 12. Madison Simon chipped in with 10 digs and six kills. Embry produced 10 kills and Lindsey Lubianski drilled six. Campos led the Hornets with 16 digs.
Southwest (12-9) and South San (11-8) also competed at the tournament. They met Saturday, with Southwest prevailing 25-19, 24-26, 25-19.
The Dragons also defeated Cuero 21-25, 25-21, 25-13 on the tournament’s final day.
On Aug. 26, Southwest won 25-17, 25-12, 23-25, 25-19 at Southside (9-8). Kassy Cruz and Aashlyn Sulaica each provided 13 kills for the Dragons. Sulaica and Brandy Martinez both were credited with 25 digs and three aces. Yasmine Garcia also served three aces while distributing 20 assists.
Analee Uriegas led the Cardinals with 22 digs. Alyssa Gallardo made four digs and led Southside with 14 assists and six aces. Ashley Sanchez had a team-high eight kills.
Harlandale/Jefferson
Jefferson (14-4, 1-0) opened the District 28-5A season Aug. 26 with a hard-earned victory at Harlandale (8-9, 0-1). The Mustangs claimed a 25-19, 25-14, 25-20 decision in the battle of playoff contenders.
Senior Gabby Vasquez led Jefferson with nine kills and 17 digs. Madelyn Chavez added 15 assists. Kate Mojica served three aces.
For Harlandale, sophomore Kianna Sandoval supplied nine assists and five digs. Dominique Delgado led the Indians with 14 digs. Angel Huron drilled eight kills.
Harlandale rebounded to defeat Southside 27-25, 25-20, 25-20 at the Cardinals’ gym. Delgado led the way with 18 digs and three aces. Alicia Garcia provided nine assists and five digs. Madeline Mendez and Tanya Ramos each finished with eight kills and Huron had seven.
