SOFTBALL WEEKEND REPORT: Smoke clears in 28-5A with Dragons & Hornets in first

Edison turns Highlands rematch into mismatch

TEAMS INCLUDEDBurbank, East Central, Edison, Highlands, Holy Cross, Jefferson, Lanier, Providence, Southwest, Southside.

When the week began, four teams were tied for first place in District 28-5A. East Central (19-4, 4-1) and Southwest (21-7, 4-1) were the only two that remained Friday.

Southwest scored five runs in the first inning on the way to a 15-5 win over Steele (14-9, 2-3) Friday on the Dragons’ field.

After Steele scored two in the third, the Dragons responded with three runs in the bottom of the inning. Southwest scored seven runs in the fifth and put the 10-run rule into effect after the Knights closed within 8-5.

Yanira Fernandez and Gaby Flores both hit home runs for the Dragons. Southwest finished with 13 hits. Winning pitcher Caitlin Terrazas allowed three hits, including a two-run home run to the Knights’ Alexis Walkden in the third inning.

For East Central, the Hornets rode senior Taylor Doege’s pitching to a 5-0 home win over Corpus Christi King (10-18, 0-5) Friday. Doege held the Mustangs to three hits.

The Hornets scored two runs in the first inning and three in the third. Junior Haydi Bugarin hit a home run.

Edison 12, Highlands 2 (6 innings)

The second-place Golden Bears (9-11, 7-1) scored four runs in the seventh inning to put themselves over the top in their first meeting with Highlands March 4. The rematch Friday wasn’t that type of nip-and-tuck struggle.

Edison, which won its third-consecutive game since a close loss to district-leading Brennan March 18, started somewhat slowly. The Golden Bears only scored three runs in the first three innings. Then they got their high-powered offense revved up and dinged Highlands (7-9-1, 4-4) with runs in each of the last three.

The Golden Bears made it 8-0 in the fourth. The Owls scored in the fifth and sixth, but couldn’t make much headway. Edison invoked the 10-run rule with four runs in the sixth.

Edison senior pitcher Celeste Vela limited the Owls, who scored 15 runs in their first meeting, to six hits. Highlands maintained fourth place in the district, despite the loss.

The Golden Bears have outscored opponents 49-7 during their winning streak. They amassed 14 hits against Highlands.

Burbank 15, Providence 11

The Bulldogs (3-15-1) led throughout the non-district game, although it became close in the later innings, on the way to ending their nine-game losing streak Friday at Villarreal Field No. 1.

Providence took a 2-0 lead in the top of the first. Burbank responded with three runs in the bottom of the inning. The Bulldogs increased their lead to 5-3 after the second, but the Provets tied it in the third. Burbank led for good after scoring seven in the bottom of the third, despite a six-run outburst from Providence in the top of the fourth.

Jefferson 13, Lanier 1 (5 innings)

The Mustangs (7-9, 3-5) romped to a District 28-4A win against Lanier (5-13, 1-7) Friday at Villarreal Field No. 3.

Lanier took a 1-0 lead in the top of the second, but Jefferson responded with seven runs in the bottom of the inning. The Mustangs scored four runs in the second and three in the third.

Jefferson senior Mary Loera limited the Voks to two hits. The Mustangs produced seven hits.

Holy Cross 12, St. Anthony 0 (5 innings)

The Knights (19-8-1) scored in each of the four innings they batted in as junior Marisol Ortega led the way.

Ortega went 3-for-3 with three RBIs in the non-district game Friday at Holy Cross. Winning pitcher Julia Ibarra, who held the Yellowjackets (7-10-1) to two hits, picked up two hits including a triple and an RBIs at bat. As a pitcher, Ibarra struck out five.

Erin Torralva (double) and Kat Rangel (triple, 2 RBIs) also collected two hits. Melanie Cortinas (2 RBIs) and Megan Hernandez (RBI) also produced triples. Omni Garcia drove in a run.

Holy Cross finished with 16 hits. The Knights built a 5-0 lead in the first two innings. They put the 10-run rule into effect with a six-run rally in the fourth. The game was reschduled from Wednesday

The Knights lost their first district game Saturday to powerhouse Victoria St. Joseph in a TAPPS District 3-4A game at Holy Cross.

St. Joseph scored the game’s first run in the fourth inning. Holy Cross took the lead with three runs in the bottom of the fourth. The visitors scored again in the fifth and took charge with two runs in the fourth. They finished with nine hits.
