Sam Houston had a couple of reasons to have a letdown Saturday in Poteet.
First, the game was one of 11 in the area to be postponed from Friday to Saturday because of icy weather. The unusual Saturday morning start time was a built-in excuse, if the Hurricanes chose to use it.
Second, the first-place Hurricanes weren’t expected to encounter much resistance from the Pirates.
Sam Houston didn’t entertain any thoughts of a letdown, powering past Poteet 86-28.
Hurricanes coach Ike Thornton and his staff typically come up with objectives for games the team might have a difficult time getting motivated for. Although Sam Houston’s players didn’t achieve a perfect score, they received a high passing grade.
“When we play Poteet – especially there – it’s usually one of those games the kids can get distracted,” Thornton said. “But I’m pretty happy. They stayed engaged the whole time.
“It was a good game all-around.”
The objectives were based on maintaining high energy and making plays indicative of hustle.
“The number of offensive rebounds, the number of deflections and the number of charges taken,” Thornton said, “were areas we were monitoring. Hustle stats are what we were trying to keep an eye on. We just try to make sure we are playing with a purpose.”
Sam Houston held the Pirates to 10 points or fewer in each quarter. The Hurricanes led 22-5 in the first quarter and 47-11 at halftime.
Jordon Harris led Sam Houston with 16 points. Devin Allen scored 15 and senior Brandon Seals had 14 points in his second-straight start in place of promising sophomore Robert Christian.
“Brandon shot the ball well, and that’s something we’re going to need from him down the stretch,” Thornton said. “Brandon stepped up and played some more minutes. We were hoping to get him going.”
Allen also was in double digits in rebounding.
“Devin was active,” Thornton said. “We know he had at least eight offensive rebounds. That was something we wanted to get out of him, more rebounds.”
