GIRLS BASKETBALL MIDWEEK REPORT: Holy Cross defeats rival Providence

Rockets take off in second half for comfortable win at Pearsall

TEAMS INCLUDED:Brackenridge, East Central, Edison, Fox Tech, Harlandale, Highlands, Holy Cross, Kennedy, Lanier, Providence, Sam Houston, Southwest, Young Women’s Leadership Academy.

The Knights (8-11) defeated rival Providence (2-11) 40-19 Tuesday at Holy Cross, led by senior Julia Flores and sophomore Kat Rangel.

Flores scored 12 points and Rangel also reached double figures with 10 for Holy Cross. The Knights’ Brianna Salinas scored seven points.

Freshman Esther Knodell was the Pro-vets’ top scorer with six points.

Kennedy 46, Pearsall 34

The Rockets (5-7) overcame a 14-10 halftime deficit for a decisive victory Tuesday at Pearsall (9-12). The Rockets scored just one point in the second quarter, but outscored the Mavericks 36-20 over the next two.

Sophomore Cameron Orta led Kennedy to its second-consecutive win with 17 points. Gisela Sanchez contributed15 points and Esmeralda Manzanares produced eight in the non-district game.

Southwest 66, Alamo Heights 60

Southwest (13-5) established a 31-28 halftime lead and held off Alamo Heights in the second half for a non-district victory Tuesday.

Dragons statistics were unavailable. Emily Weyand scored 29 for the Mules (3-7).

East Central 61, Sam Houston 30

The Hornets (7-10) limited Sam Houston (1-12) to two first-quarter points and outscored the Hurricanes 25-10 in the first half Tuesday at East Central’s Bonewitz Center.

Freshman Brittany Rodgers recorded one of her best scoring outputs of the season with 19 points. Post Janik Alexander-Smith supplied 13 points. Senior Claudia Flores scored eight.

For the Hurricanes, junior Dajah Thomas contributed a team-high nine points.

MLeadership Academy in a District 28-4A game at Fox Tech.

Lanier 55, Fox Tech 22

The Voks (6-11, 3-1) got a battle from Fox Tech (4-12, 1-3) in the first half of District 28-4A, but Lanier’s defense stepped up after halftime. It limited the visitors to just three points in the last 16 minutes.

The Buffaloes were within 24-19 at the half. Junior Carla Ponce was Fox Tech’s top scorer with six points.

Sophomore Ruby Garza led the three Voks in double figures with 18 points. Sabrina Cortinas added 14 points and Ashley Lopez contributed 10.

Highlands 54, Edison 46

Highlands (14-8, 3-1) gained some separation from the Golden Bears (7-13, 1-2) with a 25-point second quarter Tuesday at Edison and hung on for the District 28-4A victory.

Junior Alexis Darden led the Owls with one of her best offensive performances of the season. Darden scored 17. Freshman Kiara Pesina chipped in with 11 points. Stephanie Munoz scored nine points. Jazmine Jackson and Jina Lackey had eight apiece.

Senior point guard Marisa Salas produced a game-high 20 points for Edison.

Brackenridge 74, YWLA 16

The Eagles (15-4, 3-0)  in a District 28-4A game Tuesday at Brackenridge. Brackenridge held YWLA (1-10, 0-4) to two points in the first half.

Senior substitute Brittney Morales led Brackenridge with 17 points. Miranda Acuna supplied 16 points and Breeann Hernandez scored 11.

Clarissa Castro scored five points for the Cardinals.
