GIRLS BASKETBALL: Brackenridge overpowers Edison 74-31 in 28-4A

Brackenridge broke open a 2-2 game with 18 unanswered points and never looked back in a District 28-4A game Tuesday at Edison.

The Eagles (14-4, 2-0) won 74-31, recording their eighth victory in nine games. They share first place in 28-4A with defending champion Brennan and Lanier after two rounds of district play.

In the two 28-4A games, Brackenridge has scored 129 points and given up 45.

“I just tell the girls that defense is what wins games,” Brackenridge coach Tamiko Matthews said. “Our offense comes from that. It’s not about the points you score. It’s about the points you allow.”

Brackenridge outscored Edison 21-2 in the third quarter of its district opener.

“We missed a few shots early and it kind of spread from there,” Edison coach Angie Alonzo said. “I think we came out overanxious. The kids got in ridiculous foul trouble in just the first quarter. That hurt us also.”

Sophomore Skyler Reyna led the Eagles with 21 points. The all-senior backcourt of Miranda Acuna and Breann Hernandez contributed 18 and 10 points, respectively. Each of Brackenridge’s starters produced at least three steals.

Senior post Paula Moreno and junior substitute guard Jasmin Chapa led the Golden Bears with seven points apiece.
