Golden Bears comeback falls short in Tommy Bowl

Jefferson saved its best for last.
The Mustangs (1-9, 1-5) rode three first-quarter touchdowns from junior back Jesse Flores to a 28-22 win over Edison (3-7, 1-5) Saturday at Benson Stadium. It was Jefferson’s first win of the season and tied the teams for sixth place in District 29-4A.
Flores ran for 205 yards on 36 carries. He scored on a 24-yard run with 7:17 remaining in the third quarter. Before the quarter ended, he also scored on runs of three and one yards. The last two scores came in the final 43 seconds of the period, separated by an Edison turnover.
The Golden Bears pulled within 18-points when Jesus Banuelos kicked a 28-yard field goal late in the second quarter. Quarterback Jonathan Hernandez (87 yards, 21 carries) ran nine yards for a touchdown and threw an 11-yard scoring pass to senior Andres Aguilar (46 yards, 4 receptions) in the third quarter. Edison trailed 21-16 entering the final quarter of 2013 for both teams.
Brian Bolton gave Edison a 22-21 lead on his only carry of the game, with 4:31 to play. Only 10 second3 remained when D’Andre Melton (70 yards, 6 catches) caught the winning, 16-yard touchdown pass from Weston Redding (12 of 20, 123 yards).
Aguilar finished with 99 rushing yards on 25 attempts. Hernandez completed nine of 24 passes for 128 yards.
Jefferson outgained Edison 356-317 in total yards.
