THURSDAY
Southside (0-7, 0-4) vs. Harlandale (6-1, 3-1) at Harlandale Memorial Stadium, 7 p.m.
Harlandale got back on track last Friday with a 42-23 win over Memorial. Now the Indians are in a four-way tie for first place in District 29-4A and can put pressure on the other co-leaders with a win.
One of the best developments from last week’s win was the first 200-plus yard game of the season from senior Nicholas Martinez. Martinez could be in line for another big game, as the Indians won’t need to take risks against the Cardinals.
Harlandale’s biggest concern offensively will be avoiding turnovers, something it has been good at this year.
Quarterback Brandon Ramon has passed for 1,489 yards with 16 touchdowns and just two interceptions.
Southside made two interceptions last week, but committed five turnovers. The Cardinals’ defense actually limited Kennedy to fewer yards (262 total yards) than the Indians had in a 21-6 loss last Friday.
The best sign for the Cardinals is that they kept the game close and kept the score within a manageable range.
Offensively, though, Southside had a setback, mustering just 153 total yards and no touchdowns. The only score came on an 88-yard kickoff return from Timmy Rodriguez.
Omar Guadarrama stepped up to split carries with Rodriguez and ran for 37 yards. Establishing the run will be essential against Harlandale so that quarterback Jake Ramos can throw more effectively.
Harlandale leads the series 4-3. The Indians last won in the series in 2009 (the teams didn’t play in 2010 or 2011). Southside has won three of the last four games. 2012 score: Southside 32, Harlandale 21.
