TUESDAY VOLLEYBALL ROUNDUP: East Central comes back to defeat Southwest and set up 28-5A showdown

Harlandale, Highlands, Sam Houston keep winning streaks intact

Host Southwest fought back from the brink of a sweep against East Central (15-13, 2-0) to gain the upper hand, but the Dragons (12-20, 1-1) couldn’t hold off the Hornets in a decisive fifth game. The Hornets claimed a 27-25, 28-26, 25-27, 16-25, 15-12 win Tuesday and retained a share of first place to set up a Friday showdown.

East Central will play host to Steele (18-15, 2-0) at 7 p.m. Friday in a match whose winner will temporarily, at least, get custody of the district lead. The Knights defeated South San (12-11, 0-2) 25-11, 25-14, 25-19 in another District 28-5A match Tuesday at the Durbon Center. 

Senior Brandy Campos led East Central with 31 digs. Madison Simon produced 17 kills. Senior Danny Alvarez dealt 27 assists and Alex Pena had 17. Junior Nichole West contributed 10 kills and 19 digs. Christie Cosper and Kaylin Mills each served two aces. Lindsey Lubianski manufactured 1.5 blocks for the Hornets, who won their fourth-consecutive match.

For Southwest, senior softball standout Kamerie Vidales served seven aces, pounded 21 kills and chipped in with four blocks. Megan Hernandez and Zoe Marin each finished with 29 digs. Freshman Aashlyn Sulaica added 11 kills. Sophomore Angie Aguilar distributed a team-high 24 assists while Dori Martinez and Yasmin Garcia each dealt 13. Garcia also served three aces. Kassandra Cruz had a team-best five blocks.

Harlandale d. Southside

The first-place Indians (20-7, 6-0) extended their winning streak to 10 matches with a 25-19, 25-19, 23-25, 25-10 District 29-4A victory at Southside (5-20, 1-5).

Senior libero Sierra Sandoval led Harlandale with 23 digs. Katie Neira added 16 kills. Senior Cera Cerda served four aces. Junior Erika Arredondo made two blocks.

Southside received 10 assists, eight digs and two aces from Alyssa Gallardo. Cristina Guerra plastered seven kills and made seven digs. Freshman Analee Uriegas contributed 15 digs and two aces. Sophomore Selena Raudales added 10 digs and also served two aces. Ariana Cisneros finished with seven assists. Aimee Wood notched six kills. Mayra Sendejo made two blocks.

Highlands d. Burbank

The Owls (14-18, 7-1) notched their seventh-straight District 28-4A win, sweeping the Bulldogs (7-19, 2-7) 25-18, 25-7, 25-18 Tuesday at Highlands.

Junior outside hitter Emily Pearce helped Highlands remain in second place with 10 kills and 11 digs. Senior  Emily Pearce served four aces. Analisa Garza supplied 22 assists.

For Burbank, Antwanisha Riddle stepped forward with five blocks. Jenna Villanueva produced seven kills. Alejandra Martinez hustled for 15digs. Bekah Valma dealt six assists.

Sam Houston d. Hawkins

The Hurricanes (17-8, 1-0) stretched their winning streak to four matches with a home District 28-3A sweep of Hawkins 25-5, 25-12, 25-10.

Sophomore Rita Davis and junior Tiaria Mackey each served five aces to lead the Hurricanes. Davis also recorded eight assists while Mackey powered five kills. Jasmine Barden made nine digs and Karisma Mitchell recorded two blocks for Sam Houston.

Holy Cross d. Austin Regents

The Knights (23-10, 3-3) ended a two-match TAPPS District 3-4A losing streak with a 25-13, 25-19, 17-25, 25-18 victory over Austin Regents Tuesday at Holy Cross. No Holy Cross statistics were available.

Jefferson d. Lanier

The Mustangs (18-9, 6-3) swept Lanier (6-19, 3-6) 25-10, 25-12, 25-21 in the District 28-4A match in the Voks’ gym.

Krystin Garcia, Selena Garcia and Gabby Vasquez each served three aces. Vasquez also made 10 digs and produced 10 kills. Selena Garcia distributed 11 assists.

For the Voks, LeeAnna Martinez had team-highs of five kills and two blocks. Samantha Ibarra and Brenda Urbina added four assists apiece. Emily Huerta made five digs.

Brackenridge d. Fox Tech

The Eagles (10-22, 6-3) defeated Fox Tech (9-27, 1-8) 25-18, 25-12, 25-17 Tuesday at Brackenridge.

Senior Elisabeth Crane led Fox Tech with 11 assists, six kills and two aces. Ruby Zavala contributed six kills and three blocks. Ruby Chapa made six digs, Elizabeth Narezo added five and Adelind-Iris Sifuentes had four.

Brackenridge statistics were not available.

McCollum d. Kennedy

The Cowboys (7-19, 2-4) smacked Kennedy (6-19, 1-5) 25-13, 25-9, 25-14 for a 29-4A victory that snapped a four-match losing streak Tuesday at McCollum.

Jasmine Cordova led McCollum with 14 digs and four aces. Erin Stinnett dealt 14 assists. Danielle Saldivar pounded seven kills. All are seniors.

Seniors Ashley Garza and Clara Lopez led the Rockets with four digs apiece.
