Harlandale (19-7, 5-0) rose to the top of the District 29-4A standings last week with a five-game win in Castroville Friday. The victory extended the Indians’ winning streak to nine matches.
The Indians were tied with Medina Valley (16-15, 4-1) for first before the match, but outlasted the Panthers to win 25-21, 17-25, 25-21, 8-25, 15-11.
Erika Arredondo played an outstanding all-around match for Harlandale with 10 kills, six blocks, four digs and two aces. Katie Neira blasted 18 kills.
In the defensive department, Sierra Sandoval led Harlandale with 21 digs. Her sister, Kianna Sandoval, added 12 assists and 11 digs. Catherine Silva dealt a team-best 16 assists and made six digs.
Other contributors for the Indians included: Jackie Espinoza (6 kills, 5 assists, 2 blocks), Cera Cerda (8 kills, 9 digs), Madeline Mendez (5 kills) and Kelly Landin (4 digs).
East Central d. Corpus Christi Carroll
The Hornets (14-13, 1-0) opened District 28-5A play with a sweep of Corpus Christi Carroll (12-11, 0-1) by identical scores of 25-21 last Friday at East Central.
East Central sophomore Kaylin Mills had a team-high 10 kills to go with two aces. Madison Simon contributed nine kills and seven digs. Hornets leaders included Danny Alvarez (17 assists) and Brandy Campos (15 digs). Alex Pena supplied seven assists.
Sam Houston d. Poteet
The Hurricanes (17-8, 1-0) began District 28-3A play with a 25-10, 25-18, 25-18 win at Poteet.
Sophomore Rita Davis served five aces for Sam Houston. Senior Tashonna Williams contributed five kills and five blocks. Tiaria Mackey dealt eight assists. Tia Logan added four kills.
Highlands d. Jefferson
A share of second place was at stake Friday at Highlands, but the Owls (14-18, 7-1) held their ground against a determined opponent. Highlands defeated the Mustangs (17-9, 5-3) 29-27, 25-19, 25-27, 28-26 in the District 28-4A match.
Highlands sophomore setter Analisa Garza distributed a whopping 53 assists to go with 17 digs. Four Owls recorded more than 10 kills and five posted 15 or more digs.
Kill leaders for Highlands were: Jazmine Jackson (14 kills), Jenna Thompson (13), Melody Guzman (12), Bryten Mitchan (10) and Emily Pearce (7). Jessica Alvarez and Pearce each recorded 29 digs. Other defensive demons were: Genesis Garcia (19), Kiara Pesina (15), Jackson (10) and Thompson (7). Mitchan added six disgs and three blocks.
For Jefferson, junior Gabby Vasquez turned in team highs of 12 kills and 26 digs. Courtney Garcia was credited with 10 assists. Marissa Vargas made four blocks.
The Mustangs ended the week in a three-way tie for third place with Brackenridge (9-22, 5-3) and Edison (9-21, 5-3). Undefeated Brennan (27-3, 8-0) remained in first. The Bears defeated Brackenridge (9-22, 5-3) 25-10, 25-13, 25-11 Friday.
Memorial d. Southside
The Minutemen (10-18, 1-4) claimed their first 29-4A victory in a five-game marathon against Southside (5-19, 1-4), which was fresh from its first district win Tuesday. Memorial prevailed 11-25, 25-23, 20-25, 25-23, 15-11 at Edgewood Gym.
Seniors Jatziry Duarte and Abigail Garcia led Memorial with 11 digs and six kills, respectively. Bridget Gomez distributed 11 assists. Larissa Lopez made three blocks.
For the Cardinals, Alyssa Gallardo contributed 28 assists and four aces. Analee Uriegas made 27 digs and also served four aces. Cristina Guerra recorded 16 kills.
Southwest d. South San
The Dragons (12-19, 1-0) swept South San (12-10, 0-1) 25-19, 25-16, 25-19 Friday at the Bobcats’ Durbon Center.
Junior libero Zoe Marin led Southwest with 10 digs and two aces. Freshman Aashlyn Sulaica fired eight kills. Dori Martinez dealt 10 assists. Melissa Garza finished with three blocks.
South San’s Lauren Estrada hammered a match-best 11 kills. Jaclyn Ozuna was credited with 14 assists. Angel Salazar and Kimberly Tobias each made nine digs. Giselle Mata added three aces.
Providence d. Lanier
The Provets (10–14) won for the second-consecutive night Friday, winning a non-district match at Lanier (6-17).
Senior Logan Glick led Providence with 11 kills and 15 digs. Junior Mital Patel distributed 19 assists. Sabrina Casares and Gabby Mitchell each served three. Hannah Sasser added three blocks.
For the Voks, sophomore Samantha Ibarra distributed 14 assists and made 10 digs. Senior LeeAnna Martinez was credited with four kills, four blocks and three digs. Ana Escobedo made four kills and four digs. Sophomore Brenda Urbina made five digs. Jenny Flores finished with three blocks.
Edison d. Fox Tech
The Golden Bears finished the week in a three-way tie for third after defeating Fox Tech (9-26, 1-7) Friday at Edison.
Karen Guerrero (14 kills, 10 assists, 4 digs) and Marissa Cortinas (16 assists, 8 digs) led Edison. Senior Juanita Gomez contributed eight digs. Senior Elizza Torres put down four kills. Destiny McCarty added four digs.
Fox Tech was led by Ruby Chapa with12 assists, four digs and three kills. Valerie Villarreal led the Buffaloes with 12 digs. Elisabeth Crane manufactured five kills, five digs and three aces. Ruby Zavala slammed four kills. Brianna Campos made four digs. Adelind-Iris Sifuentes smashed two aces.
Burbank d. YWLA
The Bulldogs (7-18, 2-6) vanquished Young Women’s Leadership Academy 25-8, 25-27, 25-13, 25-9 Friday at Woodlawn Gym.
Senior Jenna Villanueva produced an outstanding match for Burbank, pounded 18 kills and 11 blocks. Defensive wizard Alejandra Martinez, also a senior, picked up a match-best 30 digs. Bekah Valma dealt 19 assists.
McCollum’s top servers were Leticia Gomez, Adrianna Gutierrez and Antwanisha Riddle, each of whom had two aces.
Junior Sabrina Cantu led the Cardinals with eight kills and four digs. Alejandra Ramirez made 17 digs. Karease Williams dealt 15 assists. Ashley Trevino and Serina Trevino each served two aces.
Floresville d. McCollum
Coming off a loss last Tuesday, the Tigers (17-14. 4-1) had to battle to avoid another defeat at home Friday against McCollum. Floresville pulled out a five-game, 25-18, 25-18, 22-25, 17-25, 15-9 victory in 29-4A.
Jasmine Cordova led the Cowboys (6-19, 1-4) with 16 digs and three aces. Senior Erin Stinnett continued her hot hitting with 14 kills. Savannah Borjas finished with 15 assists. Neyda Sanchez made two blocks.
