McCollum, Highlands record big wins in Tuesday’s action

Providence (8-12, 1-0) launched its TAPPS 2-5A season with an impressive three-game victory over St. Anthony.
The Provets prevailed 25-18, 25-17, 25-17 at St. Anthony Wednesday behind six kills and four assists from senior Logan Glick. Sabrina Casares also made six digs. Emerald Rodriguez added two aces.
Brackenridge d. YWLA
The Eagles (6-20, 2-1) notched a 25-14, 25-15, 25-19 win against Young Women’s Leadership Academy Wednesday at Lanier.
YWLA was led four kills and two blocks from Clarissa Castro. Karease Williams dealt seven assists. Jylian Bolton served two aces.

McCollum d. Burbank
McCollum (5-15) concluded the non-district portion of its schedule Tuesday with a 25-16, 25-19, 25-21 home victory over Burbank (5-15).
Neyda Sanchez led the Cowboys with 15 kills. Savannah Borjas finished with 23 assists and three service aces. Jasmine Cordova made 15 digs.
For the Bulldogs, Antwanisha Riddle recorded eight kills and two blocks. Jenna Villanueva also contributed two blocks. Vanessa Vargas made 10 digs. Rebekah Valma served two aces. Leticia Gomez distributed five assists.
Highlands d. Edison
The Owls (10-17, 3-1) capitalized on Jefferson’s loss to district-leading Brennan Tuesday to surge into second place in District 28-4A. Highlands cooled off red-hot Edison (6-19, 2-1) 25-18, 25-18, 28-26.
Analisa Garza dealt 22 assists and Emily Pearce made 19 digs for Highlands. Jenna Thompson and Jazmine Jackson each recorded eight kills. Senior Melody Guzman served four aces.
Senior Karen Guerrero shone for Edison defensively and offensively with 27 digs and 12 kills. Paula Moreno and Elizza Torres manufactured 5.5 blocks apiece. Marissa Cortinas finished with 21 assists. Destiny McCarty served two aces.
The Golden Bears had defeated Edison in the Wagner Tournament.
Harlandale
Senior Katie Neira fired 16 kills, six digs, two aces and two assists to lead Harlandale (14-7) to a 25-11, 25-22, 25-23 Tuesday over Lockhart at the Indians’ gym.
Sabrina Esparza chipped in eight kills and three aces. Sierra Sandoval served a team-high four aces for the Indians. Senior Kelly Landin made six digs. Breanna Soto and Catherine Silva had five apiece. Junor Alicia Garcia led with nine assists.
Sam Houston d. Memorial
Memorial (9-14) employed its experience to secure a 25-18 win in Game 1 Tuesday at Sam Houston. The Hurricanes recovered to win 25-17, 25-14, 25-23 with help from 16 digs and two blocks from senior Tashonna Williams.
Junior Tiaria Mackey supplied 10 kills and three aces. Sophomore Rita Davis distributed 22 assists in the non-district match.
The Minutemen received six assists and two aces from senior Bridget Gomez. Classmates Jatziry Duarte (8 digs) and Abigail Garcia (4 kills) also made key contributions.
South San
The Bobcats (11-7) outlasted the host Thunderbirds in a marathon non-district match Tuesday at Wagner (12-11). South San won the five-set decision in rally scoring, 23-25, 25-17, 19-25, 25-23, 16-14.
South San received contributions from several players, including frontcourt players senior Rebekah Rodriguez (11 kills, 3 aces), junior Lauren Estrada (7 kills) and junior Giselle Mata (7 kills, 3 aces).
Bobcats sophomore Erica Jimenez finished with 18 assists and six digs. Junior Angel Salazar served four aces and Kim Tobias recorded three to go with 10 digs. Senior Jaclyn Ozuna was credited with four assists. Lanier d. Fox Tech
The Voks (5-14, 2-2) evened their District 28-4A record with a 25-20, 25-17, 16-25, 25-18 home win over Fox Tech (9-22, 1-3) Wednesday.
Senior LeeAnna Martinez led Lanier with four kills and four blocks. Sophomore Brenda Urbina provided seven assists and four aces. Emily Huerta made five digs and Elisa DeHoyos added four kills.
For the Buffaloes, senior Elisabeth Crane finished with nine digs, eight kills and three aces. Senior Ruby Chapa dished 12 assists and added five digs. Valerie Villarreal made 17 digs. Elizabeth Narezo (5 digs, 4 kills), Adelind-Iris Sifuentes (5 kills, 3 aces) and Ruby Zavala (4 kills) offered support. Juniors Breanna Campos (8 digs) and Carla Ponce (5 digs) contributed defensively.
