DeLuna throws for 312 yards, but Owls fall to Uvalde

Harlandale senior quarterback Brandon Ramon ran for two touchdowns and passed for one, leading the Indians (2-0) to a 28-19 win over Lanier Saturday at the SAISD Complex.
Lanier (0-2) took a 7-0 lead with 5:20 remaining in the first quarter on a pass from Nick Garcia (18 of 27, 206 yards) to Rodrigo Garcia (8 receptions, 94 yards). Ramon tallied the equalizer for Harlandale little more than three minutes later with a one-yard touchdown run.
The Indians gained the lead on a 37-yard pass from Ramon (10 of 24, 205 yards) to Nick Perez. Harlandale led 13-7 with 7:08 remaining until halftime. It was Perez’s only reception of the evening.
Harlandale increased its lead to 28-7 early in the fourth quarter with a pair of rushing touchdowns. Nick Martinez (81 yards, 7 carries) ran eight yards for the Indians’ third score. Ramon scored on a one-yard plunge.
The Voks closed the gap with a pair of late touchdowns. Nick Garcia connected with Steven Horton on a 10-yard pass play and Julian Castillo (50 yards) reached the end zone on a two-yard run.
James Mendoza led the Indians with five catches for 123 yards. Joshua Esquivel made four catches for 52 yards for Lanier.
Uvalde 45, Highlands 28
The Coyotes (1-1) erased a Highlands lead with six unanswered touchdowns Saturday at Wheatley Heights Sports Complex.
The Owls (1-1) scored their first two touchdowns on a pair of scoring passes from veteran quarterback Jordan DeLuna (21 of 43, 312 yards). The senior hit D’Quan Todd (45 rushing yards, 32 receiving yards) with an 11-yard strike 50 seconds into the game. After a Uvalde touchdown, Richard Santos was on the receiving end of a 20-yard pass play early in the second quarter.
Uvalde tied the game 14-14 with 8:20 until halftime on a nine-yard run from Zach Sanchez. It was the second of four touchdowns for Sanchez (13 carries, 101 yards).
Marco Blanco (177 yards, 28 attempts) and Sanchez each added rushing touchdowns before halftime, giving the Coyotes a 28-14 lead.
Malik Johnson accounted for Highlands’ final touchdown with a seven-yard reception from DeLuna with 10:40 remaining in the game.
Xavier Long led the Owls with seven catches for 112 yards. Sabian Santos made three receptions for 52 yards. Uvalde’s Jerry Almaraz threw for 175 yards. The Coyotes outgained Highlands 576-400 in total yards.
It was Highlands’ only appearance at Wheatley Heights this year.
