FOOTBALL ROUNDUP: Riggs carries Southwest to big win over Buttons

Defense keeps McCollum undefeated under Hinojosa with win over South San

 

Teams included: Brackenridge, Central Catholic, East Central, Edison, McCollum, South San, Southwest.

 

A new standout running back may have been uncovered at Southwest.

Reilly Riggs ran for 116 yards on nine carries and caught a 32-yard touchdown pass, leading the Dragons (1-1) to a stunning 48-27 victory Friday at Central Catholic’s Bob Benson Stadium.

Central Catholic (0-2) struck first, scoring on a 30-yard pass from Josh Godfrey to Joseph Nava (86 rushing yards, 84 passing yards). The Dragons scored the next 28 points.

Senior Bryan Donnell (53 yards, 8 carries) ran for five yards and Jonathan Cruz (51 yards, 6 carries) went 25 for rushing touchdowns that gave Southwest a 14-7 edge. Quarterback Bowen Crisp (5 of 8, 113 yards) then threw 41 yards to Jaedon Johnson and 32 yards to Riggs to complete the first-half scoring.

The Buttons’ Noah Eppinger scored on a 52-yard fumble return, cutting Southwest’s lead to 28-12. Riggs put the game out of reach with a 60-yard run at the 6:06 mark of the third quarter.

On the Dragons’ next possession, Tyrone Middleton (49 yards, 7 carries) broke away for a 38-yarder that made it 41-12.

Will Barr (3 receptions, 44 yards) scored on a 34-yard reception and Ray Cortez (4 receptions, 34 yards) caught an 10-yard touchdown pass in the fourth quarter. Nava threw for both scores.

Alex Quesada returned a kickoff 86 yards for Southwest’s last touchdown.

McCollum 14, South San 5

The Cowboys improved to 2-0 under new coach Juan Hinojosa, having allowed just five points in their first two games.

McCollum’s defense limited South San (0-2) to 101 total yards, including 56 yards on 30 rushing attempts. The Cowboys gained 203 yards.

South San took a 3-0 lead on Alvaro Lira’s 25-yard field goal, 8:56 before halftime. However, McCollum sophomore Mike Ramirez scored twice before the half ended.

Ramirez (3 receptions, 100 yards) caught a 31-yard pass from junior Ralph Vidal (128 passing yards, 67 rushing yards) with 2:48 until halftime. Ramirez counted a 13-yard touchdown run with 16 seconds on the clock.

A Bobcats safety in the third quarter was the only score of the second half.

Christian Morales ran 14 times for South San, gaining 75 yards.

East Central 46, Marshall 23

The Hornets (2-0) also remained unbeaten under its new coach. East Central alum Clint Hartman won his second game as Jeremy Jones passed for three touchdowns and Javion Polk ran for three more.

Jones (12 of 26, 217 yards) threw 38 yards to Dallas Polasek and 24 yards to Wanya Ward (60 yards, 2 receptions) for the game’s first two touchdowns. Polk (79 rushing yards, 62 reception yards) added one- and seven-yard scoring runs, then caught a five-yard touchdown pass from Jones in the first half.

Dennis Chavez contributed a 44-yard field goal as East Central romped to a 37-0 halftime lead.

Another rushing touchdown and a EC safety increased the Hornets’ lead to 44 points. Then Marshall (0-2) completed the scoring with 23 points in 17 minutes.

East Central outgained the Rams 357-161.

Carrizo Springs 37, Edison 28

A 42-yard run from Jonathon Hernandez and a three-yard run from Andres Aguilar staked Edison (0-2) to a 14-0 lead, but Carrizo Springs scored 24 unanswered points and never trailed again Friday at the SAISD Complex.

Hernandez, who ran for 163 yards and passed for 110, scored on the long run 22 seconds into the game, raising hopes for an upset. But Jthe Wildcats’ Jesse Rodriguez and Freddie Longoria (142 yards, 15 carries) each scored two touchdowns to wrest the lead away from the Golden Bears.

Carrizo Springs (2-0) ran for 393 yards.

Edison scored the last eight points, on a 31-yard run from Aguilar (104 yards, 20 carries) and a safety. David Sanchez made two receptions for 47 yards for the Golden Bears.

Floresville 26, Brackenridge 21

Brackenridge senior quarterback Ramon Richards scored three touchdowns, including one on a 22-yard run that put the Eagles (1-1) ahead by a point with 2:15 left in the third quarter in a non-district game Friday at Wheatley Heights Sports Complex.

Unfortunately for the Eagles, Floresville (1-1) notched the winning score with 6:22 remaining in the final quarter when Kyle Bippert hauled in a six-yard pass from Koby Wilkerson. Gilbert Ortiz ran for 159 yards and two touchdowns for the Tigers.

Richards (132 yards, 14 carries) also scored on runs of four and three yards. He also completed 10 of 18 passes for 146 yards.
