Senior QB Sanchez rushes for 225 to lead Bulldogs
Three long touchdown runs from Jeremy Sanchez propelled Burbank to a 34-6 non-district win over Pearsall Thursday.
Sanchez gained 225 yards on 10 carries while leading the offense to 319 total yards. Not to be outdone, Burbank’s defense limited the Mavericks to 219 yards and accounted for two touchdowns at the SAISD Complex as the Bulldogs brought a 13-game losing streak to a close.
The defense handed Burbank (2-0) a 7-0 lead with 4:33 remaining in the opening quarter when Andy Garcia dashed seven yards with a fumble return.
Little more than a minute later, Pearsall (0-2) had pulled within a point when quarterback T.J. Navarro ran 42 yards for the score. A two-point conversion pass attempt was unsuccessful, and Burbank did nothing but buind on its lead.
With 1:39 still to play in the first quarter, the Bulldogs broke the first of their big plays. Sanchez scored on a 68-yard keeper that made it 14-6 with Pedro Rodriguez’s extra-point kick.
Sanchez’s second touchdown run covered 51 yards with 9:38 until halftime. The 6-foot-3 senior only completed two passes for 27 yards, one week after throwing for 149 yards. Marcos Luna caught both passes.
Burbank didn’t need to take to the air much. Along with converted end Tru Bradford (45 yards) at running back, Sanchez helped the Bulldogs gained 292 yards on 33 rushing attempts.
A 64-yard interception return for touchdown from Joe Alvarado late in the third quarter preceded Sanchez’s last rushing touchdown. Sanchez ran 48 yards for the score 1:05 from the game’s end.
Burbank’s last previous win was Oct. 21, 2011, 39-6 over Memorial on the same field.
