FOOTBALL: Week 1 previews

THURSDAY

Pearsall (0-1) vs. Burbank (0-1) at SAISD Sports Complex, 7 p.m.

Memorial gave Minuteman coach Alex Guerra his first victory at the school by defeating Pearsall last week. Burbank has a chance to do the same for second-year coach Mark Perez Thursday, although the Mavericks won’t be willing victims in their second game under the direction of David Silva.

Establishing a ground game likely will be a top priority for the Bulldogs after Hays limited them to five rushing yards in their opener. On the other side of the coin, Pearsall ran for a respectable 237 yards against Memorial, and Burbank can’t afford to let the Mavericks control the ball if they hope to win.

Burbank senior quarterback Jeremy Sanchez showed promise in his first start. He threw for 149 yards and can give the Bulldogs a chance to stretch the field. It could be a big advantage. 2012 score: Pearsall 14, Burbank 6.
