Lanier pulls out three-game win over Burbank in 28-4A

TEAMS INCLUDED: Burbank, East Central, Fox Tech, Harlandale, Holy Cross, Jefferson, Lanier, Sam Houston, South San, Southside, Young Women’s Leadership Academy.

Harlandale (17-5) blasted Wagner (11-10) Tuesday in three games on the heels of an outstanding showing at the SAISD Tournament over the weekend.

The Indians won 26-24, 25-17, 25-19 over Wagner in a non-district match. Senior Cera Cerda led Harlandale with 15 kills.

Freshman Kianna Sandoval contributed 8 assists and eight digs. Sierra Sandoval made 16 digs. Sabrina Esparza chipped in with eight kills and eight digs. Catherine Silva added nine assists and seven digs. Madeline Mendez made five kills. Erika Arredondo led the Indians with three blocks.

Lanier d. Burbank

The Voks (4-13, 1-1)lost the first game, but fought their way through to secure a District28-4A victory Tuesday against Burbank at Lanier.

The Bulldogs (5-12, 0-2) defeated Lanier 26-24 in Game 1. The Voks collected a 25-19 decision in the second game and evened the match. They closed it out with hard-earned 26-24 and 27-25 wins.

LeeAnna Martinez had six kills and four blocks for Lanier. Sarah Chavez was credited with five assists and two aces. Elisa DeHoyos mustered nine digs, three aces and three blocks. Yulisa Beltran had five kills and two digs. Emily Huerta (8 digs) and Alejandra Mendoza made defensive contributions for Lanier.

For Burbank, Jenna Villanueva led the way with eight kills. Rebekah Valma dealt 10 assists. Adrianna Gutierrez served three aces. Antwanisha Riddle made four blocks. Adrianna Mendoza collected four digs.

Jefferson d. Sam Houston

The Mustangs (13-6) needed just three games to earn a non-district victory over tough SAISD rival Sam Houston (14-8) Tuesday.

Senior Gabby Vasquez turned in an outstanding match for Jefferson with 11 kills and 18 digs. Marissa Vargas used her vertical leap to make five blocks. Selena Garcia had 11 assists and served two aces.

Dionna Camino made 11 digs for Sam Houston. Tiaria Mackey smacked six kills. Rita Davis distributed seven assists. Tashonna Williams finished with two blocks and two aces. Tia Logan also made two blocks.

South San d. Southside

The Bobcats (10-6)n a 25-19, 25-19, 25-17 win over Southside (4-14) Tuesday behind 15 assists from Erica Jimenez at South San.

Angel Salazar made nine kills for South San. Senior Kimberly Tobias provided 10 digs. Giselle Mata served four aces. Kaitlin Serna had three blocks.

Southside statistics were not available.

East Central

The Hornets (11-10) defeated LaVernia (10-9) 25-16, 25-17, 23-25, 25-12 Tuesday in a non-district match.

Kaylin Mills dazzled for East Central with 18 digs, 17 assists and five service aces. Brittany Campos played her usual active defense, with 20 digs. Christi Crosper and Nichole West each put down five kills. Danny Alvarez provided 11 assists. Lindsey Lubianski was credited with two blocks.

Fox Tech d. YWLA

The Buffaloes (9-20, 1-1) notched their first 28-4A victory by defeating Young Women’s Leadership Academy 26-24, 25-18, 25-14 in a tight match at Jefferson.

Senior Elisabeth Crane made 16 kills and four blocks to lead Fox Tech. Adelind-Iris Sifuentes had a strong service game with six aces and Deanna Rodriguez added two. Ruby Chapa dealt 17 assists. Ruby Zavala made four digs.

For YWLA, Karesea Williams led with 14 assists. Clarissa Castro made seven kills.

Holy Cross

The Knights (17-5) stomped Hawkins Tuesday 25-9, 25-10, 25-6 at Holy Cross.

Stella Ramirez supplied 15 assists and nine aces for Holy Cross. Victoria Gonzalez also served nine aces and added six digs. Molly Ozuna also collected six digs. Megan Hernandez made two blocks.
