Memorial wins three matches at Edgewood ISD Tourney
Harlandale and undefeated Holy Cross each won all four of its matches during the first day of the Harlandale ISD Tournament, which was played at Harlandale and McCollum.
Harlandale (2-2) picked up its first two wins of the season after two tough non-district matches. The Indians won a pair of close matches, prevailing 25-19, 25-21 over Jefferson and 25-23. 25-20 over Marshall.
The Indians, who will play Holmes (3-1) in their first match Saturday, received contributions from several players.
Senior standout Katie Neira supplied 13 kills against Marshall and nine against Jefferson. Catherine Silva made accross-the-board contributions in the Marshall match with 11 assists, five aces and eight digs. Kianna Sandoval added nine assists. Sabrina Esparza made nine digs and seven kills. Jacqueline Espinoza made eight digs. Kelly Landin finished with five digs.
Sierra Sandoval had a strong game against Jefferson with 12 digs and four service aces. Esparza had seven digs and four kills. Silva distributed 12 assists and provided four digs. Kianna Sandoval added four assists. Madeline Mendez made two blocks.
Jefferson statistics from the match were unavailable.
Holy Cross (4-0) will be matched up against Stevens (4-0) Saturday, after logging wins over Laredo United 25-14. 25-19 and St. Anthony 25-9, 25-18. Knights statistics from both matches were unavailable.
Brackenridge, Jefferson, McCollum and South San each won one match.
McCollum (1-3) downed Brackenridge 25-15, 25-19 before running into Stevens. The Falcons won 25-16, 25-18. No McCollum statistics were available.
Brackenridge bounced back to defeat Weslaco East 20-25, 25-9, 25-19 behind 16 assists, six digs and four aces from Renee Osife. Kathy Sifuentes made 13 digs. Jolicia Shelton-Brown made seven kills and four digs. Ana DeLeon added five kills. Alyssa Quiroz was credited with five digs.
Against McCollum, Osife distributed nine assists and made six digs. Sifuentes also made six digs. Darlene Jackson added two blocks.
South San (3-1) lost its first match of the season, falling to Stevens 19-25, 25-13, 25-8. The Bobcats recovered to defeat Laredo United 25-14, 25-16.
Jefferson defeated District 28-5A rival Burbank 25-11, 25-15.
Edgewood ISD Tournament
Memorial raised its record to 7-2 with three victories Friday.
The Minutemen defeated red-hot Sam Houston (7-1) 25-19, 16-25, 25-19 in a key match. Memorial also won over Providence 25-22, 25-18 and Eagle Pass Winn 25-20, 21-25, 28-26.
Sam Houston won 25-20, 25-21 over Young Women’s Leadership Academy and 25-12, 25-12 over the Memorial junior varsity.
Providence (3-4) defeated Fox Tech (5-4) in a three-game match, 25-19, 22-25, 27-25. The Provets also won 25-21, 25-8 against YWLA.
Fox Tech edged Kennedy 25-15, 25-18 and Winn 26-24, 25-21. Kennedy defeated YWLA 2516, 25-17.
Northside ISD Tournament
East Central and Southwest all picked up victories over Floresville in the highly competitive tournament.
East Central (3-2) defeated the Jaguars 25-16, 25-23. The Hornets were led by Brandy Campos with 12 digs. Six-foot-three sophomore Lindsey Lubianski made two blocks and served two aces. Danny Alvarez distributed nine assists. Madison Simon and Christi Crosper each finished with five kills. Nichole West added five digs.
Southwest (3-3) defeated Floresville 25-17, 25-15. The Dragons were led by eight digs apiece from Megan Hernandez and Zoe Marin. Hernandez and Kamerie Vidales each had four kills. Angie Aguilar was credited with seven assists.
Wagner Tournament
Edison defeated Southside 15-25, 25-23, 25-17 in a tournament match.
Joanna Benavidez finished with 10 digs, Amy Marcos added eight and Karen Guerrero had five for the Golden Bears (1-5). Marissa Cortinas dealt nine assists. Elizza Torres made three blocks.
