BOYS BASKETBALL: Lanier all-stater Sanchez picks Sierra College

It’s too soon to call it a trend, but the SAISD’s brightest boys basketball stars are headed to California.

Like Sam Houston’s Isaac Thornton before him, Lanier’s two-time all-stater Martin Sanchez is headed for the left coast to continue his basketball career. Sanchez has committed to play at Sierra College, a two-year community college in Rocklin, Calif., according to Lanier coach Rudy Bernal.

Sanchez averaged 20.9 points a game last year as a senior while leading the Voks to a 29-6 record and the Region IV quarterfinals. The four-year varsity player averaged 18.3 points a game for a 29-7 Lanier team as a junior and 5.4 points on the Voks’ regional finalists as a sophomore.

The 6-foot-1 senior played every position from the wing to the post at Lanier and featured a well-rounded game. Because of his feathery touch from three-point range, Sanchez seems most likely to project as a shooting guard at the next level.
